Abstract: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mental illness that affects approximately 6 million American adults. These individuals have several medical and prescription treatment options, but supportive communication from family members and friends can prevent relapses and help the individuals with BD manage their symptoms. In conjunction with medications, having high-quality, social support is the best way to mitigate the symptoms of BD. Despite this, bipolar support recipients often feel as though they do not receive the support they desire, creating support gaps or support inadequacy. Support inadequacy has been linked to several negative mental health consequences including stress, anxiety and hostility. For Individuals with BD these added consequences to their mental health could be detrimental. To address these supportive gaps, the principal investigator conducted a qualitative content analysis. The content came from 28 supporters of adults with BD who were asked to write detailed responses to open-ended questions regarding their support provision. The paper examines which strategies support providers perceive to be effective and ineffective. Additionally, the study examines the barriers they perceive to providing effective support and their advice for how to overcome these barriers. Differences between current support provision and the supportive needs of adults with BD are discussed, along with implications for support inadequacy.
