Collegiate coaching is a demanding profession with important implications for student-athlete development. Finding success in collegiate coaching is challenging as it is a complex and evolving industry with few guidelines on how to succeed. It is important to learn from the resident experts who have succeeded in this profession. The purpose of this study was to identify the success factors employed by expert collegiate athletic coaches as well as the challenges faced when implementing these best practices. In addition, this study determined how expert coaches measure success and what recommendations they have for aspiring collegiate coaches.

520 $a This study used the qualitative method of phenomenology to explore the insights of expert athletic collegiate coaches. Data was collected through semi-structured one-on-one interviews from 15 collegiate coaches who were deemed experts in their field. An analysis of the experiences of expert coaches revealed the presence of 16 best practices that are influential to finding success in collegiate coaching. The findings of this study aim to help current and aspiring collegiate-level coaches enhance their body of knowledge by learning from experts in their respective fields who have been able to overcome challenges and achieve success.
