Current literature contains very little information on the topic of emotional support animals. The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the literature by examining the experiences of people who utilize prescribed emotional support animals. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted, audio-taped, and transcribed. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The data from this studied produced over twenty themes related to the use of prescribed emotional support animals. The findings of this study have important implications for mental health professionals and consumers, physicians, and policy makers.
