The breadth of eating disorder and body image research has clearly demonstrated the significant association of body size and weight to body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology; however, this research lacks the evidence for the other components of body size unrelated to fatness, specifically, body frame. Thus, the purpose of this study was to test the mediating effect of body dissatisfaction on the relationship between body frame (i.e., body size separate from shape or weight) and eating disorder symptomatology, and the moderating effect of body frame dissonance on the relationship between body frame and body dissatisfaction. Participants included 68 adult undergraduate females from a private university located in the Pacific Northwest. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires that consisted of questions regarding age and ethnicity, and items from the EAT-26 and EDI-3, as well as elbow breadth, wrist circumference, height, and weight measurements. Results indicated that there was no association between body frame and body dissatisfaction (B = -1.90, p = .325), and no moderation effect of dissonance on this relationship (B = -1.47, p = .657). There was, however, a significant relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology ( B = .602, p = <.01), which is congruent with previous research findings. Additionally, body frame was significantly related to eating disorder symptomatology at the p < .05 level (B = 2.50, p = <.029). The primary contribution of this study is the introduction of the body frame variable into eating disorder and body dissatisfaction research, indicating a distinction between the function of body frame and BMI with regard to body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology, as well as highlighting a multisystemic approach to the treatment of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction.
