The mission of education today is to educate the whole child which includes an academic education coupled with teaching lifelong skills along with behavioral, social and emotional education and support. This study sought to determine if a relationship existed between involvement in a high school band program and the education of the whole child with particular attention to academic achievement. Current students at Gershwin North High School made up the sample for this research study which included 50 high school juniors involved in high school band and 50 high school juniors not involved in high school band. From the sample, each student was invited to participate in a survey collecting data in regard to involvement/non-involvement in high school band, current academic performance, educational experience and perceptions of personal attributes while also allowing the researcher to gather data in regard to their GPA (grade point average), ACT score, and PLAN score. The researcher also collected qualitative data from five teachers within the school, seeking their perceptions of academic achievement and character attributes of students' involved and not involved in high school band. Data were collected and analyzed to determine if statistically significant results indicated the existence of positive relationships. From the data it was determined that students involved in high school band do have significantly higher GPAs than students not involved in band. The data also displayed that students involved in band show a significant tendency to score higher on the PLAN and ACT tests. Student and teacher perception analysis did not show statistical significance, but established tendencies in above average perceptions for students involved in high school band. The findings of this study address the hypothesis that a positive relationship will be present between involvement in high school band and academic achievement.
