Thesis (M.F.A.)--Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, 2016.
This paper is a documentation and examination of religion in comic books and graphic novels. (1840--2014) The author's intent is to show how religious themes, symbolism, and open discussion of religion and religious themes have progressed through the history of comics to the current state. The objectives of this thesis are as follows: 1. First, to chart the course of religious influence from 1840--2014 in comic books and graphic novels. As the comic book industry matured, the religious topics diversified. 2. Second, to investigate the possible influence of religious themes on the major developmental movements of the comic book industry. This closer look resulted in the discovery that religious themes did, in fact, play a major role in leading industry milestones (e.g. God Nose and The Adventures of Jesus in the Underground Comix movement and A Contract With God and Maus that became a catalyst in the emergence of the graphic novel). 3. Lastly, to interview comic creators who have used religious themes and devices as part of their narratives. This resulted in the realization that the creators' religious beliefs had little influence on the outcome of their creative work.
