Telecommuting has grown exponentially since its inception in the 1970s. In 2010, there were 26.2 million telecommuters who telecommuted at least one day a week and 3.1 million full-time telecommuters, representing 20% of the U.S. working adult population. It is estimated that by 2016, there will be one in four telecommuters or 63 million telecommuters. Managing telecommuters has challenges due to the lack of face-to-face interaction (i.e., communication, technology, and building relationships). Studies have found that managers' behaviors can alter the efficiency, productivity, moral, quality, and culture of his or her organization. The purpose of this descriptive/exploratory qualitative single case study was to explore the type of manager behavioral characteristics that are needed to be effective in a virtual work environment. The participants shared that empowering, supporting, building relationships, and trusting as effective manager behavioral characteristics. The specific problem was that virtual managers' behavioral characteristics must match their distinctive environment. Studies have found that managers' behavioral characteristics should emulate the work environment. Participants shared that communication and relationships require behavioral modification between work environments, thus it is supported that managers' behavioral characteristics should match their distinctive work environments. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to provide a platform for the participants to express his or her lived experience with managing. The sample size was 7 participants (4 males and 3 females) who manage at least one employee who telecommute at least one day a week and experience managing traditional employees. Several additional themes emerged from the participants' interviews (work agreements, technology, and job) that were not significant to the current study, but will benefit from future studies. Six of the 7 participants have organizational work agreements. Per the participants' perspectives, technology or lack of technology is influential to the effectiveness of employees. The majority of the participants felt that telecommuting is job specific. In conclusion, organizations and managers who adhere to the findings of this study will be able to train, retain, and hire manager who fit into the strategic plan.
