Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2016.
Burnout has been recognized as a widespread phenomenon among those in human service work. Furthermore, burnout has been associated with a number of detrimental effects both to individual workers and the organizations for which they work. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide human service workers with skills to prevent and treat burnout within themselves as well as aid managers who oversee human service workers recognize the signs of burnout within their employees and develop skills for intervention. The curriculum offers a four week session workshop comprised of 1.5 hours each (plus a 1.5 hour session for managers) aimed to decrease levels of emotional exhaustion, increase empathy, and increase personal accomplishment, all of which are hallmark symptoms of burnout. The workshop uses vignettes, mindfulness techniques, psycho-educational approaches, and journaling assignments.
