Thesis (Ph.D.)--Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, 1993.
This dissertation combines the disciplines of systematic theology and missiology to elaborate an evangelical theology of contextualization. Some would contend that evangelical theology must either leave its high view of biblical authority in order to contextualize, or leave its commitment to contextualizing in order to preserve its view of the authority of Scripture. The burden of this work is to demonstrate that evangelical theology is fully capable of offering an adequate foundation for modern contextualizing which is both faithful to biblical orthodoxy and sensitive to divergent cultural expressions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation combines the disciplines of systematic theology and missiology to elaborate an evangelical theology of contextualization. Some would contend that evangelical theology must either leave its high view of biblical authority in order to contextualize, or leave its commitment to contextualizing in order to preserve its view of the authority of Scripture. The burden of this work is to demonstrate that evangelical theology is fully capable of offering an adequate foundation for modern contextualizing which is both faithful to biblical orthodoxy and sensitive to divergent cultural expressions.

To do that, it will be necessary to present and defend four introductory propositions. First, evangelical theologians have reached a consensus on a working definition of contextualization that is non-contradictory, coherent, and relevant. Second, evangelical theology offers satisfactory answers to the general theological prolegomena questions related to contextualization. Third, evangelical theology is capable of approaching contextualization with a self-critical, objective understanding of its own inherent potential problems. Fourth, evangelical theology has an adequate understanding of the biblical foundations for contextualization that is capable of responding effectively to non-evangelicals' challenges to its approach to Scripture in the contextualizing process. Chapters one through four argue those propositions.

Having arrived at conclusions regarding those propositions, it is then possible to present an evangelical model of contextualization. The first part of that presentation will include the exposition of the four basic models of cross-cultural communication. The second part involves moving from that general discussion to a practical model of contextualization with specific suggestions for steps to be taken. Finally, it is necessary to present an evaluation of evangelical contextualization against the backdrop of conciliar contextualizing theologies which includes critique and future projections. Chapters five through seven purpose to meet those three goals.

In all, the dissertation intends to fulfill its objective of offering evangelical contextualization as a viable option in global theological debate that proposes theological and biblical foundations, theories, practical models, and a working definition of contextualization which can assure evangelical contextualization a prominent place in international theological debate and missiological practice of this crucial contextualizing mission of the Church.
