Thesis (M.S.)--Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, 2015.
The rapid development of genomics and next generation sequencing has outpaced genomics training programs. Although many courses are being offered to medical students or healthcare professionals for genomics and advanced genomics technologies, there is no reliable measure available to evaluate their performance. Thus, we aimed to develop and test a knowledge measure for evaluating healthcare professionals' understanding of genomics. 268 healthcare professionals and trainees were included in this study. The study results revealed that our measure has good reliability and validity in assessing genomics knowledge and indicated that most healthcare professionals and trainees have high levels of awareness knowledge of genomics and next generation sequencing. Our findings also indicate important areas of improvement for future revisions and development of a standardized genomics knowledge measure.
