Thesis (Ph.D.)--Hampton University, 2016.
This qualitative study explored Historically Black Colleges and University development officers' perspectives of sustainable fundraising practices from three top endowed HBCUs. One-on-one interviews and document analysis were the sources of the data for the study. Themes emerging from the investigation were the differences in the personal and professional backgrounds of the development officers, institutional support, experienced staff, sustainable fundraising strategies to engage donors and their fundraising initiatives. Findings from the study included HBCU development officers having institutional support from the senior leadership, experienced staff, adequate budgets and sustainable fundraising practices and initiatives by cultivating and maintaining relationships with alumni, corporate and foundation donors. Recommendations for research included expanding the study to compare the sustainable fundraising practices and the perspectives of development officers from HBCUs to PWIs. The comparison might allow sharing sustainable fundraising practices with fundraising practitioners and college and university presidents.
