The purpose of this study was to understand the drug-related behavior of Black college football players who self-disclose using street drugs during their time at a specified Division I football program. "Street Drugs" is a term used by the NCAA for a banned class of substances. Examples of street drugs include: heroin, marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), synthetic cannabinoids (e.g. spice, K2, JWH-018, JWH-073) (National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2013a).

Factors contributing to Black college football players' engagement include: where they are/were consuming, with whom they are/were consuming, how often they use(d), and what substance is/was used. More importantly, this study sought to understand the motives behind these males' drug use. It was essential to understand when their engagement formed (e.g., at a younger age or during college) and who or what influenced them to participate in drug use. It was also crucial to better understand how drug use has affected these men's collegiate experiences (e.g. drug tests, eligibility, or academics) and whether or not the drug use has continued after leaving their Division I football program. The following are the overarching research questions of this study:
