The purpose of this study was to examine the barriers that impact the swimming ability of young adult African-American college students. Participants between the ages of 18 to 24 were recruited from Health and Wellness courses offered in the Department of Health, Human Performance, & Leisure Studies. The Minority Swimming Ability Scale questionnaire was used with permission from Dr. Richard and Carol Irwin. The Minority Scale which consisted of 32 questions, had five domain, that measured: (a) Income/financial influences, (b) Facility access/safety, (c) Interests/motivation, (d) Personal appearance, and (e) Parents/caregivers. Interest/motivation and Parents/Caregivers. Analysis revealed two of the domains (Interest/motivation and Parents/Caregivers) had the greatest influence on swimming ability among the African-American college student's ages 18-24 years. Furthermore Gender differences were also found. Theses findings have practical implications for addressing the development of swimming programs for African-American college students as well as those younger coming through the undergraduate college pipeline.
