Josiah Royce, in explaining the self and then identifying the community, describes the three authentic conditions1 for a healthy community. Among many identifiers, he emphasizes in his second and third conditions that communication through careful, respectful listening produces the essential unity that bonds that community. Since Royce proposes interpretation to establish flourishing communication, he offers a thorough answer to the question of understanding in the realm of communication.

In a praxis of a particular communal experience, religious life, which fulfills Royce's first condition of community, it is proposed that the members of such a community practice Royce's second method of careful listening and objective, judicious, charitable interpretation through a medium that promises respect. To go a step further to make Royce's interpretation genuinely understood in the way of an assured approach, and since pragmatism excels in action, Hans-Georg Gadamer, the acknowledged German master of hermeneutics, is invoked to show the stability of Royce's paradigm, and, while giving attention to a specific method of communication that would provide carefully vetted, cautious, listening language with a particular formula, an idea is recommended as a practical aid to the necessary unity.

This idea proposes the method of interpretation called the non-violent communication (NVC) of Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D. Rosenberg's NVC in practical action enabling those interpreting though this process in communication to develop an awareness of care for the communication of others, and in interpreting good will, respect, attention and acknowledgement of the dignity of the member of the community, Royce's third condition of community, unity, is better achieved.

1 In order to have a committed community, first, human selves forge a bond to participate in life from the past, in the present, and beyond in the future. His second condition, engaging in authentic community through a process of careful listening, enhances the harmony and communication within the group. This deep level of ontological interpretation and personal communication augment Royce's third condition, the vital component, unity: the essence of authentic community.
