Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2014.
The arts influence the lives and health of communities. The arts can improve the quality of life, strengthen social interaction and provide inspiration and enjoyment. There is strong evidence that in addition to its aesthetic value, the arts stimulate success and prosperity by generating millions of dollars into the economy. This economic impact has been studied both nationally and locally multiple times over the past forty years but the majority of these studies have been focused on arts organizations and their audiences' spending. Very few surveys have included specific information on how individual artists contribute to the economy. This study endeavored to find out what kind of economic impact the individual artists in Delaware make to their local communities as well as the state of Delaware. A survey was sent to individual artists on the Delaware Division of the Arts database. These artists were asked to indicate their income from art as well as their expenses related to the creation of their art during 2011. The results show that individual artists in Delaware earned over $1.5 million from their art and expended over $10 million into the economy of Delaware. This economic impact offered proof that individual artists are an integral player in the economic life of Delaware.
