Thesis (M.A.)--The Claremont Graduate University, 2015.
User-generated porn platforms like Pornhub and Xtube allow users to craft erotic selfhoods for public audiences, basically functioning as pornographic social networks. This thesis imagines user-generated porn platforms like these porn tube sites as spaces for negotiating erotic self-creation in ways that are unprecedentedly public and dialectic. Porn is now often an integral part of everyday media generation and digital life. Taking this into account, I compare several theoretical conceptualizations of the public sphere in contemporary culture and their usefulness for theorizing the phenomenon of user-generated pornography. Jodi Dean, Zizi Papacharissi, and Michael Warner each offer their own theoretical frameworks for thinking about a 21st century public. Dean's "communicative capitalism:- the view of internet discourse as commodified, competitive engagement- accounts for the monetization of user-generated porn and new forms of porn publicity. Papacharissi argues that the virtual sphere is one of hybrid public and private concerns, driven by narcissism and commercialization. Her emphasis on self-representation accounts for the abundance of free user-generated pornography and ways users negotiate privacy. Finally, Michael Warner's theory of publics and counterpublics accounts for the risk and taboo inherent to pornographic participation. None of these models are made to deal with pornographic media creation in this context, but together they provide lessons for cultural studies scholars seeking to theorize the user-generated porn space as public. I argue that the best way to explore these questions moving forward is through ethnographic work, engaging users (who are both creators and consumers) in notions of audience and self to better understand how porn functions as an aspect of everyday life.
