When systems theory is introduced to normative definitions of health, as espoused by the World Health Organization and exponents of allopathic bio-medicine, it poses a question which is the central inquiry of this dissertation: What are the theoretical implications of considering health from a systemic and relational perspective, not only for the individual, but for the entire eco-systemic community? Much of what is articulated in contemporary medical literature about health is based on a model of individual well-being (WHO, 1946) and fails to address the contextual role of relationships; the mind-body continuum as comprised of dynamic relational systems and the relationships between humans and members of the eco-system. This theoretical dissertation, presented a review of the literature on two interpenetrating dimensions of systemic health: The human person, as articulated in theories of traditional medical modalities and their contextual cosmologies; i.e. Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic and First Nations modalities and the other dimension being the purview of Deep Ecology; the human relationship to the eco-system as an experiential engagement with community. These two dimensions have been presented as the basis upon which to consider a theoretical revision of health as a relational praxis, an ethos, wherein both the eco-system and the human community embedded within it are beneficiaries. This dissertation endeavored to contribute to an expansive and inclusive understanding of health and apply systems thinking to the pragmatic concerns of individual and collective health for the purposes of envisioning a future where health and flourishing are not considerations relegated exclusively to human beings.
