Thesis (M.A.)--Villanova University, 2015.
This paper focuses on three issues regarding the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ: (1) the biblical narrative of the baptism of Jesus; (2) the archaeological evidence concerning the baptismal site beyond the Jordan; and (3) the theological implications of Jesus' baptism for today's world. The baptismal accounts in the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and in John's gospel are compared. This comparison confirms that the event marks the beginning of Jesus' ministry and the introduction of Trinitarian thought. Questions are posed that invite the reader to take a closer look at the significance and meaning of Jesus' baptism. An attempt is being made at drawing attention to the historically accurate location of Jesus' baptism based on archaeological and biblical evidence---the eastern side of the Jordan River at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. The paper includes a research bibliography for further study.
