Many artists use animals as a medium in art, some intentionally harm or kill them. The presence of creativity and an artistic purpose separates these exhibitions from that of animal cruelty outside of the art world. Despite the distinction in intentions, society at large views those who harm animals as animal cruelty offenders, with little to no amnesty towards artistic freedoms. This paper discusses the societal clash between artistic freedom and the general public's moral opinion by utilizing examples from several artists, including Tom Otterness, Kim Jones, Rick Gibson, Damien Hirst, Wim Delvoye, Adel Abdessemed, Tinkebell, Marco Evaristti, and Amber Hansen. With the belief that harming animals will lead to harming humans, contemporary culture has placed a stigma on those who choose to harm animals for any reason. The ability to harm animals comes from a mental separation between man and beast, and those who do not injure animals lack this division, holding value in each animal's life. Legally there are minimal protections for animals, as current laws do not specifically address the use of animals in artistic exhibitions. This vagueness lends support to both sides of the discussion animal abuse in art.
