In the spring of 1974, a family of actors has recently landed in Kansas City, Missouri. Father, Gene Mackey, is working for one of the areas four professional dinner theatres and has been authorized by his employer to mount a children's play in response to Mackey's research which reveals widespread support in the community for a dedicated children's theatre. Though personal interviews and a review of print sources, this thesis with examine the founders' backgrounds, the inception of the company, and the production history of Theatre for Young America. This thesis will recount the resilience, adaptability, and dedication of a family that has left a lasting impression on Kansas City in the form of a professional theatre for young audiences that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.
