Thesis (Psy.D.)--The University of the Rockies, 2016.
Compassion fatigue (CF) is a phenomenon that, left untreated, has the potential to increase emotional exhaustion and physical illness (Jacobson, 2012). While there exists an abundance of CF research specific to professional helpers, there is a shortage of research on CF and volunteer caregivers. Qualitative action research was chosen for this study. Action research utilizes active collaboration between researcher and study participants by focusing on changes within an organization, agency, or institution (Zuber-Skerrit & Fletcher, 2007). Nine church-based volunteer caregivers were recruited to participate in this CF study which consisted of three phases: a two-hour education group, a two-week, self-guided training, and a one-hour follow-up meeting. Data was collected using a written survey. Written responses were analyzed and hand-coded for themes. The four research questions answered by this study were "What do caregivers understand about CF in the context of their role as caregivers?", "How helpful was CF training to the work of volunteer caregivers?", "What experiences or personal factors contribute to the development of CF in volunteer caregivers?", and "What are the potential challenges of providing CF training to volunteer caregivers?". Findings suggested that CF impacts caregivers similarly to professional helpers. Second, study participants found the training helpful to their work as caregivers. Third, participants acknowledged a variety of personal factors which contribute to CF. Fourth, participants identified challenges associated with providing CF training to volunteer caregivers. Results of this study suggest that CF training was beneficial to this group of volunteer caregivers.
