The purpose of this research is to investigate the value of high school interscholastic athletic participation on student achievement. This research is a causal comparative study of student academic achievement, as defined by grade point average and behavior, of twelfth grade student athletes compared to non-athletes. The empirical data show inconsistent findings with the effects of athletic participation on student achievement; therefore, this research was conducted to provide supplementary data and analysis of the impact on high school interscholastic athletic participation and student achievement. Ex post facto data were collected and analyzed to better understand this relationship. The researcher used descriptive statistics and t-tests to compare the academic performance of student athletes and non-athletes. The results of this study indicate students who participate in interscholastic athletics during their senior year of high school perform significantly better than their non-participatory peers in terms of GPA attainment. This research has found that there is no significant difference between the average number of in-school discipline referrals received for athletes as compared to non-athletes.
