The ability to rapidly switch between tasks is an important component of executive functions. The present study examined the role of language in task switching, in particular whether the beneficial effect of language is limited to cue retrieval or instead extends to true task switching. Twenty-four undergraduate students completed a 2:1 cuing paradigm. There were two different cues for each task, which gave rise to cue repetition trials, cue switch trials, and task switch trials. This paradigm allowed us to measure cue retrieval costs and true task switch costs. Both short (300ms) and long (1200ms) cue-stimulus intervals were included. In separate blocks, participants engaged either in an articulatory suppression task or a foot-tapping control task. Results showed the typical task switch findings with large task switch and cue switch costs. However, there was no effect of articulatory suppression at either short or long CSIs beyond increasing overall reaction times.
