Phonological Awareness (PA) skills are a fundamental part of early literacy development. This study investigated five phonological awareness skills of 16 first grade English language learners who speak Spanish and English through the use of a language use questionnaire and two researcher-developed assessments; one assessment was in Spanish and one in English. The results of the skills were compared in Spanish and English in order to identify the similarities and differences of PA skills between the two languages. The participants in this study reported using and being exposed to more Spanish than English outside of school; however, participants scored higher in the English version of the Phonological Awareness Test than in its Spanish equivalent, Habilidad Fonologica. The researcher concluded that there is a significant difference of PA skills between each language. Research in the area of early literacy development between Spanish and English is important due to the increase in the number of Spanish speaking ELLs in the public schools. As the number of ELLs in the public school rises, there is a possibility for ELLs to require speech-language services.
