Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2015.
A quantitative review of news articles covering the disappearance and search for Malaysia Flight 370 from China's People's Daily (PD), Malaysia's New Straits Times, and The New York Times (TNYT), extends an established cultural research epistemology by showing significant differences in hard news delivery. The complexity and uncertainty surrounding this event will prompt news writers to explain the situation, speculate, and attribute cause. Utilization of one-way ANOVA and a post-hoc Tukey Tests show many instances of Chinese and Malaysian articles using more holistic communication than American articles containing more analytic traits. Notably, TNYT shows to be significantly more analytic than NST and PD. Post-hoc results are accepted as significant when p < .05. Holistic and analytic differences are attributed to cognitive orientations bedrock in East Asian and Western cultural histories.
