Asia: Place or Hollywood stereotype?
- 150 p.
Source: Masters Abstracts International, Volume: 55-04.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Nebraska at Omaha, 2016.
American films often portray Asians as all being the same and coming from a strange and exotic place called Asia. This "Asia" represented in movies does not exist in reality. It is rather an imaginary place created through stereotypical depictions and flamboyant representations of place.

With the diversity of the focus groups, the focus group discussions explored the stereotypes of Asia that are portrayed in American movies. The discussions included how these stereotypes are portrayed, why they persist and what affects they have on Asians in America. We will look at what the participants think of this place called Asia. We will see how many feel their Asia, or the Asia portrayed in movies, is a real or imaginary place.

It was found that eighty percent of the participants felt that the Asia they imagine and see in movies is a Hollywood stereotype. This supports the hypothesis that Hollywood's use of stereotypes distorts Americans idea of Asia.
