Guarding the thought, a theme based on a poetico-philosophical intuition, designates an intellectual urgency to dramatize the act of thinking as completely as possible to be able to preserve it as it is and to protect it from the internal and external threats with which it faces. The poetico-philosophical character of the intuition derives from a common problem shared by the Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) and the two great contemporary French philosophers, Alain Badiou (1937- ) and Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995). Heteronymy, providing a unique mental orientation, laid out by Pessoa's lifetime work, presents us with a simple yet quite powerful dramatic presentation of the problem at hand. Heteronyms are author and poet figures that have disparate names, different biographies and styles, and Fernando Pessoa had created as many as 136 such figures, which led to the construction of a complex differential equation. The idea of friendship can be used in mapping out this equation in three degrees of increasing complexity. In its most complex form, concentrated more in the functions of Alberto Caeiro the master, Alvaro de Campos, and Fernando Pessoa the orthonym, heteronymy gets to work as a full dramatization of the process of thinking. Alain Badiou, in a direct confrontation with the poet's oeuvre, especially in his books such as Manifesto for Philosophy, The Century and Handbook of Inaesthetics, try to align his call for philosophy with Pessoa's dramatic invention. Badiou's unique formulation of the "ages of thought" makes us reconsider his reading of Pessoa in three degrees, which correspond to three different historical determinations. Gilles Deleuze, on the other hand, takes a rather indirect path, making sporadic references to the poet. However, if the curious trajectory of Deleuze's intellectual development is followed from his "The Method of Dramatization" on to his works like Difference and Repetition, The Logic of Sense and What is Philosophy? one may find out that his later interest in Pessoa's literary creation is not without reason. Deleuzian dramatization of the process of thinking, which gains even more significance in time, converges with Pessoa's project at many points.
