Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2015.
The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental descriptive comparative study was to determine if there was a significant difference between academic achievement of underrepresented minority students who were exposed to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and minority students who were not exposed to STEM education. Standardized tests (in this case, Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests) are used as indicators for Georgia Department of Education Standards and the school district to assess student achievement in mathematics. The research study combined information from Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests and compared students' scores with STEM education and non-STEM education curriculum. In spite of some gains among underrepresented students, data from national and state tests indicate the achievement gap by race still exists among the nation's school students. The study revealed mixed results of the relationships between STEM and non-STEM education students' test scores. The findings suggest that STEM education has the potential to improve student achievement on standardized assessments.
