This dissertation contributes to research at the intersection of social and resource networks. Social network scholars typically examine social and communicative behavior in networks, whereas operations researchers examine the ways resources move in networks. However, the reality is that social networks involve resource exchange and resource networks involve social dynamics. With a goal to better understand the ways in which social and resource networks interact, I draw on extensive qualitative and quantitative data from a particularly complex context: urban education. Specifically, I conduct a series of multi-methodological and multi-theoretical studies to explore social and resource networks of schools and community organizations. Taken together, the studies have implications for theory at the intersection of social sciences and operations research. Additionally, the studies provide practical insights into organizational networks in general, and more specifically, into the way we think about effective and efficient educational systems.
