Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras (Puerto Rico), 2015.
This ethnographic research looked into the value of screen media for learning English in Puerto Rico. The investigation included discussions framed within Vygotsky's Socio-cultural Theory concerning topics such as bilingualism and the family; children, family, and screen media; Puerto Rico's situation regarding English; and intersentential code switching and bilingualism. The study centered on the life experiences of a single, bilingual Puerto Rican family; it included 13 family members. Individually, the researcher's family members relate practices and thoughts regarding their use of screen media in English in Puerto Rico. The researcher acted as a participant-observer. The data collected in the study were interpreted in light of the participant's meaning-making processes and used Harry Wolcott's (1994) description, analysis, and interpretation method. The data analysis rendered 10 encompassing categories which included: Emigration Practices, Exposure, Human Component, Identity, Pop Culture, Code-switching, Strategies, Environment, Purpose, and Benefits.

The data collected evidenced that there has been a dramatic shift in how code switching is viewed. The generational element guides the change in meaning. Pop culture has greatly influenced the acculturation process and participants eloquently discuss different elements related to the physical and psychological environment that surrounded their use of screen media in English.

The researcher recommends the use of screen media to introduce English to Puerto Rican pre-school children at home, as well as for all other age groups. Parental guidance and assistance is needed to help the youngsters make full use of these experiences.

This practice should also be extended into the ESL classroom by ESL teachers, with special attention to the Human Component category. Code switching is a scaffold that should be incorporated to the ESL classroom setting. A call for creative literary material about Puerto Rican culture in the English language is mandatory. This may eventually evolve into Puerto Rico's screen media content contribution to our multicultural, globalized world.
