This review explores the relationship between music and emotion. The relationship between music, sound and perception is also explored. Sound has many qualities (pitch, tone, melody, etc.) that allow it to be shaped and molded in a way such that people are able to distinguish noise from music. Humans display a variety of emotions triggered by outside stimuli. Outside stimuli are perceived by the nervous system and processed in the brain before a certain emotion is experienced. In music different techniques are used to create sounds and themes that act as stimuli to a garner an emotional response from the listener. Memory and experience also play a significant role in the emotional experience of music. A personal experience that is linked to a certain piece of music can also elicit an emotional response from the listener. No one concrete link between music and emotion appears to exist. It seems that music and emotion correlate in many ways.
