Students with ADHD demonstrate more off-task behaviors that their peers which can lead to underachievement in academic classes. Underachievement may be due to performance deficits due to impairments in the central executive component of working memory. Brain-based research shows that the cerebellum, which has traditionally been associated with motor function, is also the part of the brain that processes learning. Research has shown that with the incorporation of physical activity in the classroom for students ADHD, students are able to complete work in less time, more accurately and remain on task for longer periods of time. Physical activity in the classroom for students with ADHD can be an important tool for teachers to assist in classroom management as a constructive outlet for their need for increased movement.
