Thesis (M.Ed.)--Nipissing University (Canada), 2016.
Music ensembles are riddled with hierarchy that is often steeped in tradition. As the member of an audience, it can be difficult to perceive forces of hierarchy and tradition. It is also possible that because musicians accept the customs and traditions that have been engrained into the culture of many ensembles, they may not have given thought to how they perceive them. This thesis investigates the role hierarchy plays within the musical ensemble. By investigating the lived experiences of music teachers and music students, this study sought to understand how they perceive their role, the importance of their role, the level of awareness they have of hierarchical structures, and what role these structures play in their day-to-day music-making. The awareness brought to the structures present within the ensemble and the implications to music education, general education, and educational leadership have the potential to influence pedagogical and leadership practices that promote student success.
