Dysfunctional, prolonged, or repeated acute stress responses have been linked to allostatic load, a condition associated with changes to basal stress systems, leading to negative health outcomes. Though recent research has examined the cognitive, situational, and physiological predictors of physiological stress responses, relatively little is known about how emotions may be linked to biological stress profiles. Further, existing research typically relies on retrospective self-report, which assesses a cognitively processed component of emotion and, further, is prone to forgetting and deliberate under-reporting. We suggest that facial coding of emotion expression may be utilized in conjunction with acute stress paradigms to capture a more 'feeling' emotion component that is expressed in the moment of stress. Though current stress theory holds that self-conscious emotion (particularly, shame) may be an important emotion in driving acute stress responses, prior findings using self-report are mixed; we propose that these conflicting findings may be reconciled by observing expressions of shame as assessed by FACS analysis. The current series of studies therefore utilized facial coding analysis to examine shame-stress links among 1) healthy young adults, and 2) children and adolescents, since the latter constitutes a group that may be naturally-occurring high in shame. Lastly, since shame-stress links have not been confirmed among Americans, we extended this research to study 3) American women and German women to examine if shame-stress links would be observed in a non-American culture. Studying these associations may reveal self-conscious emotion responses to be either health-promoting or health-damaging in the context of stress, and further could lead to interventions aimed at improving stress-related stress outcomes.
