Medical imaging overutilization has been identified as a key cost containment strategy in recent healthcare reform efforts because of the disparities that result from misuse of imaging services. Federal healthcare reform intends to address medical imaging overutilization and transform how medical imaging will be utilized in the future. Those impacted may include healthcare leaders and administrators, quality and safety officers, physicians and other ordering providers, radiologists, imaging technologists, and ultimately, the patient. The disparities that result from medical imaging overutilization, the factors that contribute to overutilization, previous efforts to address overutilization, the healthcare industry's awareness of overutilization, and federal healthcare reform efforts aimed at addressing medical imaging overutilization are explored in this project. This information is provided in an effort to make medical imaging overutilization more transparent to justify the need for reform in this field of health care. Clinical decision support, the federal reform effort federally mandated to address medical imaging overutilization, will appropriate medical imaging use and promote efficacious utilization of imaging services, which ultimately improves the safety, quality, and value of healthcare delivery.
