Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2016.
In the first chapter, I study why politicians advocate trade protections to save domestic jobs when neoclassical trade models suggest that small open economies should implement free trade. In particular, I rationalize trade protections as a second-best policy that improves the domestic welfare when the equilibrium unemployment is different from the constrain-efficient unemployment. The second chapter studies the impact of the Most-Favored-Nation principle (MFN) of GATT/WTO on the characterization of Pareto-improving bilateral trade agreements. The last chapter explores the impact of per capita income and population size on markups and bilateral trade flows in a random search framework.
