Thesis (D.M.E.)--Indiana University, 2015.
The purpose of this study was to examine third-, fourth- and fifth-graders' preferences for world musics in relation to musical characteristics and familiarity. Subjects (N = 300) rated their preferences for thirty-six 40-second excerpts of non-Western music from nine world regions using a four-item pictorial rating scale. They rated their familiarity with these same excerpts on a three-item pictorial rating scale. After these data were collected, each subject filled out a short questionnaire regarding modes of music reception, and provided an overall enjoyment rating for the listening/rating experience. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Chi-Square analysis, and Factor Analysis to compare non-Western music preferences across grade levels. Although results indicated no significant differences for preference by grade level, there were significant differences for musical characteristics and levels of musical characteristic by grade level. Additionally, there was a significant relationship between preference and familiarity for country and region.
