Objective: This study investigates the bothersome characteristics of electronic communication (i.e. "electronic boundary violations"/ "EBVs"), such as cyber-stalking and intrusive social networking within the gay and bisexual male community, as well as the correlation of masculinity and femininity with EBV victimization and perpetration. Method: One hundred and forty-four (144) participants completed an online survey examining prevalence of both experienced and perpetrated electronic boundary violations, as well as a measure of masculinity and femininity. Results: Seventy-four percent (74%) of participants reported having experienced EBVs while 60% reported having perpetrated, with EBV victimization and perpetration falling into specific patterns and typically occurs within the same subset of the population. Results deviated from previous research, with femininity as a risk factor for perpetration with masculinity as a risk factor for victimization. Conclusions: High rates of EBVs exist among gay and bisexual men, through discrepancies exist between rates of EBVs experienced and knowledge of having perpetrated an EBV. Implications for prevention and intervention programs are discussed.
