Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2016.
This study was embarked upon as a way to clarify how women's creative endeavors, whether literary or artistic, entered the public sphere in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The breadth of the concept required centering focus on the Italian city-state of Venice, between 1500 and 1650 CE. Women whose works in literature, art, and music are known today are examined through their life paths, the social positions they inhabited and the types of patronage required for each to receive publication, commissions, or recognition. Divided by literature, visual arts and music, as well as patronage and Venetian society itself, this study answers the initial question of how women living the roles of wife, artist, courtesan, orphan or nun, were able to make their creative mark in an androcentric society.
