Mental health screenings have been utilized in a variety of settings. Most recently, women of childbearing potential are choosing to utilize obstetricians and gynecologists as primary care physicians. This study developed a plan to effectively integrate mental health screenings into routine checkups for women of childbearing potential. Data was acquired from a sample of seven nonpsychiatric clinicians residing in North Carolina and practicing primarily out of an obstetrician/gynecologist's office. The clinicians' primary target population is women of childbearing potential. Participants completed a 10-question interview. Data analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti and a coding scheme. Through data collection and analysis, the following major themes were discovered as barriers preventing the implementation of mental health screenings into routine checkups: time, money, education, and training. Based on the barriers discovered through data analysis, the researcher developed a screening and referral process through primary care to overcome the barriers that prevent the implementation of mental health screenings into routine checkups for women of childbearing potential. The process developed by the researcher is cost effective and time efficient for the primary care setting. The screening and referral process can be utilized to screen women of childbearing potential for a mental health issue in a primary care facility.
