This research examined special education teachers' instructional practices utilized in the inclusion setting of three school districts in a self-contained or inclusion setting teaching reading comprehension. The purpose for this study was to investigate how teachers integrate or implement reading comprehension instructional strategies to increase students' with learning disabilities reading comprehension levels. This qualitative study conducted in three particular school districts in the rural southeast of the United States sought to gather data on the practices of experienced and skilled special education teachers. The data collection procedure involved semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and recording field notes. The participants were 10 experienced and skilled special education teachers referred by special education administrators and building administrations. The participants all had at least three years of experience teaching reading comprehension to students with disabilities. The special education teachers in this study self-reported that the most effective reading comprehension strategies for students with disabilities in the lower grades are vocabulary instruction, predictions, questioning, and the guided reading processes. The recommendations for future studies include conducting qualitative studies in the lower grades to explore ways to increase students' with learning disabilities reading comprehension, such as a case study with focus on questioning and summarizing strategies. In addition, a qualitative study on the discovery of reading comprehension professional development on special education teachers' practices in the lower grades is needed.
