This study adds to the body of research on the social functioning of gifted individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine if gifted students may be in need of social skills intervention. Are there differences in the self-perceived social skills levels between gifted and nongifted students? Based on Dabrowski's Theory of Proximal Development and the Theory of Asynchronous Development, gifted students may be prone to social skills deficits. Social Skills Improvement System questionnaires were distributed to sixth-graders in the gifted and talented language arts class and to sixth-graders in the general education language arts class at the same school. After conducting a two-sample t-test, results indicated that gifted students rated their positive communication social skills significantly lower than their nongifted counterparts. Based on this information, gifted students would benefit from informal lessons to help build communication skills, but overall, results did not suggest a need for formal intervention.
