Habitat alterations, specifically the addition of artificial reefs, have become common in coastal waters. To aid in the development of ecosystem-based fisheries management plans, a continual need exists to understand how artificial reef habitat alterations may affect community-level parameters. The goal of this study is to describe the demersal fish and invertebrate assemblages within and around Alabama's Reef Permit Zone (RPZ) in relation to habitat, abiotic, and biotic parameters. A temporal change was seen in the community assemblage from 2011-2014. In addition, a spatial difference was seen by depth within the RPZ and also between communities inside and outside of the RPZ. Many species (e.g. Longspine Porgy (Stenotomus caprinus), Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), and Atlantic Calico Scallop (Argopecten gibbus)) showed changes in biomass with increasing density or volume of structure, but predator indices had no apparent effect. This study reveals how introduced habitats can shape demersal fish and invertebrate communities.
