Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Wyoming, 2015.
Rallying motivation and cognition, goals direct the actions of individuals, consumers, and health seekers as they strive to enact healthy, complete, and meaningful lives. Still, putting goals into practice often proves difficult. If struggles persist, recurring again and again, do these setbacks signal that goal pursuit itself needs to change? If persistence becomes detrimental or if adjustments need to be made, what mental and affective mechanisms play a part in breaking through "normal" goal pursuit and the thoughts, evaluations, and feelings that protect it? The present work seeks to address these fundamental questions about goal pursuit and disengagement through the lens of action crisis for sustainability and health care-related goals. Capturing a transitional stage between increasing effort and the first stages of disengagement, action crisis occurs when an individual uncomfortably wavers between further goal efforts and disengagement. All three empirical essays share the common aim of developing an improved explanation of how consumers and health seekers manifest this internal action crisis conflict and how the cognitive, affective, and evaluative changes wrought by action crisis influence goal maintenance and disengagement. Tackling an underexplored area of goal theory in contexts with transformative potential, these essays advance understanding of how motivation, cognition, affect, and consumer goal pursuits fit together as pieces of the puzzle in goal disengagement theory. Moreover, this dissertation opens the door for dynamic work tackling theoretical and practical challenges in consumer goal disengagement that promises to elevate goal theory while shaping a healthier and more sustainable future.
