This research was a case study of the newsroom at KRWG-TV/FM, the public media organization licensed to New Mexico State University. Using focus groups, document review, and the researcher's journals, the qualitative study examined the local journalism needs of KRWG members and a focus group comprised of potential members, participants in the New Mexico State University Broadcasting Club. Changes in outreach, content, and personnel were recommended as a result of the data collected. Outreach recommendations included the formation of membership and educational advisory panels, as well as a community advocate board. Content suggestions included more programming that combined both in-depth interviews and on-location reports. In addition, continued expansion of online and election/public policy coverage was advised. Personnel recommendations included the hiring of additional news employees and the creation of a beat reporting structure. An ethics training plan was also suggested for KRWG personnel. This effort should help to ensure the sustainability of a newsroom that serves the public interest.
