Communication behaviors have been discussed in mass communication studies for many years. However, since 2000 behavior in online social network activity has changed significantly, thereby affecting human interaction.

Conformity, framing, and spiral of silence --- three moderate-effects models that mass communications researchers use to analyze communication behavior --- have been applied in studies for more than 40 years. The spiral of silence model is the most frequently used due to its significance in political elections. However, most conformity and framing researchers still use traditional quality and quantity methods. Note that in the current Internet era, researchers have much more data to work with from sources such as online social networks.

For this dissertation I have designed two set of experiments to determine whether these real world behaviors exert effects on online social network behavior. The first focuses on the bandwagon effect (specifically, looking at whether individuals follow others' opinions when making new and unfamiliar decisions), while the second focuses on framing strategies (specifically, how people use certain mass communication concepts to deliver messages).

Results from the bandwagon effect experiment indicate that when a large number of participants in the study sample decided to join a discussion in its early stages, the discussion was more likely to attract even greater attention in the future. When that number was small, the discussion was much more likely to lose most or all of its attraction. As part of this work, I also designed a system for predicting the life cycle of a post using preliminary findings to validate and model the bandwagon effect.

For the framing strategy I used a linguistic feature to test the idea that individuals post messages in the same manner as a newsroom editor. The results indicate that participants in groups focused on politics tended to use similar framing strategies in support of successful message delivery. This result was used to construct a clustering system for detecting whether individuals within groups perceive greater freedom to state opinions.
