Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2016.
The purpose of this Executive Position Paper is to identify the factors that students have identified as reasons for persisting to their second year as well as causes for their departure from Stevenson University. Retention is an issue for colleges and universities across the United States, and Stevenson University is no exception. This paper will provide an extensive review of the literature as it relates to the retention of first year students and home in on the factors that impact retention among first year students. In particular, this paper will look at factors impacting retention as well as best practices in terms of first year student persistence to the second year. This information, along with Stevenson University's retention and persistence data will be analyzed in order to make recommendations for programmatic initiatives that will improve an already positive retention rate among first year students. These recommendations will address the factors causing attrition to provide students with an engaging and academically successful first year experience.
