The industrial degradation of food in the United States forced by corporate interests since World War II was enabled by the loss of humankind's earlier sense of the growing, cooking, and eating of food as a sacred process. Historical modes of preserving foods and traditional dietary regimes were not only considered sacred but were also seasonal, regionalized, and had been developed in response to the body's needs. Nevertheless, since World War II, our collective body's wellbeing has been compromised by chemically altered genomes, which have polluted our ecosystems as well as weakened our personal health and social wellbeing by contributing to a rise in obesity, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and bone degeneration. Yet, even though a growing recognition of the sacred dimension of caring for ecosystems, bodies, and communities is sparking one of the most significant phenomena of spiritual renewal in the twenty-first century, the sacrosanct nature of historical food systems has not been examined as a vital weapon in activists' efforts against industrialized means of food production.

520 $a This dissertation posits that a more sacred and traditionally based approach to our food system is the only way forward for both the planet and ourselves; such a food system requires us to understand the nature of food the way our ancestors did: with reverence for diversity, in keeping with the needs of the body, in moderation, and with sacred intention. Utilizing interdisciplinary approaches to food studies, ecofeminist theory, and standpoint feminist perspectives, this study argues that food is a basis for forming community. It presents oral stories and writings on how the consumption of food is a spiritual, physical, sensual, and communal endeavor that expresses cross-cultural research showcasing the deeply embedded nature of women and food.
520 $a This work acknowledges that an ethical relationship with food is dependent upon the notion that we need to ask after the treatment of each commodity: plant or animal. By doing so, a deeper sense of food security for all is established, paying particular attention to the symbiotic relationship of the health of self, ecosystem, and community. Above all this dissertation makes the assertion that food is both whole and holy.
