This thesis is a study of the critical reading of Sanguo zhi yanyi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms), a major pre-modern Chinese novel, by the seventeenth century father and son Mao Lun and Mao Zonggang.

The Maos, Sanguo zhi yanyi's foremost critical editors, were responsible for the recension of the novel familiar to generations of Chinese. Their edition, with its elaborate system of critical metatexts attached symbolically to the novel, effectively shaped its reception for over 250 years.

The primary aim of the Maos was to teach readers how to read the novel in order to fully apprehend its marvelous literary qualities. Part of an endeavour to elevate the status of the novel genre in the Chinese canon, their emphasis was always on Sanguo zhi yanyi's uniqueness and its formal and moral ties to the classics.

The Maos' embedded system of metatexts within the novel provides the opportunity to reconstruct a historical reading process in situ. Their reading of Sanguo zhi yanyi combines theory and praxis within the confines of a single text, while offering a wider model for a theoretical approach to the reading of traditional Chinese narratives. Their approach is systematic and meticulous, representing one of the most profound and detailed guides for the reader of that vastly complex novel.

This study of the Maos' reading of Sanguo zhi yanyi situates them as far as possible in the context of their period and culture while drawing on Western sources for comparative purposes. The study considers the interrelated questions of the Maos' traditionalist concepts of text production and authorial creativity and their organicist world-view. The Maos' views on history, fiction and the generic status of the novel are discussed, as is the impact of those views on its reception. Also analyzed is the Maos' conception of the active, constructive role of the reader in the narrative process and their own presence within the novel as interventionist critics and a 'mediating eye' between reader and text.
