The Chinese National College Entrance Examination is a well-known, much condemned phenomenon. Claims are made by schools, teachers and parents that this examination determines the entire functioning of schools, in terms of what kind of students should be enrolled, what teaching plans should be included in syllabuses, what teaching materials should be selected, and how a class should be taught. Critics argue that this examination system has never been a tool to assess levels of achievement, instead, it has made the educational process a formidable experience, because it emphasizes rote memorization and stifles creative thinking.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This investigation is based on a brief review of the available literature about the policies and attitudes of different countries toward enrollment of higher education, as well as an intensive research on the demonstrated forms of the Chinese examination phenomenon. The issue of the Chinese National College Entrance Examination is thus examined in the context of the international educational development and the Chinese educational tradition, in the hopes that such investigation will lead readers to go beyond the current forms of examination and to find out its reasons of existence--its fundamentals, ideological support, and administrative strategies.

The support of this investigation comes partially from years of collections of published information and data analysis, and partially from years of persisting research efforts by the investigator to establish a credible relationship between available materials and the perceivable reality. The process of analysis and criticism of the Chinese National College Entrance Examination starts from the recognition of its needs, to its guiding ideology, to its principles, to its implementation of policies, and finally, to the measures taken to correct its course when there come problems.
